Video: ‘Encouragement’

I was unable to embed this video, but you can check it out on ‘Values.com’.

I just viewed it on the Fox News channel, and I was greatly encouraged by it. I think you will be, too.

The TV spot teaches a great lesson. Sometimes skilled artisans and technicians end up inadvertently discouraging aspiring learners. The story shows how with a little patience and foresight, a skilled artisan or technician can encourage a beginner.

In truth, when we are first learning something, we look to others, especially those skilled in that field, to tell us whether or not we can make it. And even if these highly skilled masters mean well, we often take their opinions as the ‘gold standard’.

I work as a software developer, which can seem like a daunting field to learn for beginners. So whenever I can, I try to encourage people to take up software development, with helpful tutorials and a kind word. (and, if requested, personal guidance)

In fact, if you’ve ever thought about becoming a software developer or web designer, I highly recommend the following resources, which are designed for absolute beginners.

Codecademy
